Their classic line-up consisted of lead singer Roger Daltrey, guitarist Pete Townshend, bassist John Entwistle, and drummer Keith Moon. They are considered one of the most influential rock bands of the 20th century, selling over 100 million records worldwide and establishing their reputation equally on live shows and studio work. The Who developed from an earlier group, the Detours, and established themselves as part of the pop art and mod movements, featuring auto-destructive art by destroying guitars and drums on stage. Their first single as the Who, "I Can't Explain", reached the UK top ten, followed by a string of singles including "My Generation", "Substitute" and "Happy Jack". In 1967, they performed at the Monterey Pop Festival and released the US top ten single "I Can See for Miles", while touring extensively. The group's fourth album, 1969's rock opera Tommy, included the single "Pinball Wizard" and was a critical and commercial success. Live appearances at Woodstock and the Isle of Wight Festival, along with the live album Live at Leeds, cemented their reputation as a respected rock act. With their success came increased pressure on lead songwriter and visionary Townshend, and the follow-up to Tommy, Lifehouse, was abandoned. Songs from the project made up 1971's Who's Next, which included the hit "Won't Get Fooled Again". The group released the album Quadrophenia in 1973 as a celebration of their mod roots, and oversaw the film adaptation of Tommy in 1975. They continued to tour to large audiences before semi-retiring from live performances at the end of 1976. The release of Who Are You in 1978 was overshadowed by the death of Moon shortly after. Kenney Jones replaced Moon and the group resumed activity, releasing a film adaptation of Quadrophenia and the retrospective documentary The Kids Are Alright. After Townshend became weary of touring, the group split in 1982. The Who occasionally re-formed for live appearances such as Live Aid in 1985, a 25th anniversary tour in 1989 and a tour of Quadrophenia in 1996. They resumed regular touring in 1999, with drummer Zak Starkey. After Entwistle's death in 2002, plans for a new album were delayed. Townshend and Daltrey continued as the Who, releasing Endless Wire in 2006, and continued to play live regularly. The Who's major contributions to rock music include the development of the Marshall stack, large PA systems, use of the synthesizer, Entwistle and Moon's lead playing styles, and the development of the rock opera. They are cited as an influence by several hard rock, punk rock and mod bands, and their songs still receive regular exposure. Студийные альбомы: 1965 - My Generation - 2002 (2 CD Deluxe Edition MCA 088112926-2) 1966 - A Quick One - 1995 (Polydor Mono Mix 527758-2 & Stereo Mix 589800-2) 1967 - The Who Sell Out - 1995 (Polydor 527759-2) 1967 - The Who Sell Out - 2009 (2 CD Deluxe Edition Polydor 5315336) 1969 - Tommy - 1996 (Polydor 531043-2) 1969 - Tommy - 2003 (2 Hybrid SACD Deluxe Edition Polydor 9861011) 1971 - Who's Next - 1986 (MCABD-37217) 1971 - Who's Next - 2003 (2 CD Deluxe Edition MCA 088113056-2) 1973 - Quadrophenia - 1996 (2 CD MCA MCAD2-11463) 1975 - The Who By Numbers - 1996 (Polydor 533844-2) 1978 - Who Are You -1996 (Polydor 533845-2) 1981 - Face Dances - 1997 (MCA MCASD-11634) 1982 - It's Hard - 1997 (MCA MCASD-11635) 2006 - Endless Wire (Polydor 1709519) 2006 - Endless Wire (2 CD Deluxe Edition Polydor 1709520) + 2013 - Tommy (Super Deluxe Edition) Концертные альбомы: 1970 - Live At Leeds - 1995 (Polydor 527169-2) 1970 - Live At Leeds - 2002 (2 CD Deluxe Edition Polydor 112618-2) 1970 - Live At The Isle Of Wight Festival - 1996 (2 CD Castle Communications EDF CD 326) 1982 - Live From Toronto - 2006 (2 CD IMC Music IMA 104201) 1984 - Who's Last (MCA MCLD 19005) 1990 - Join Together (2 CD Virgin Records CDVDT 102) 2000 - The Who Live - The Blues To The Bush 1999 (160 kbps) 2003 - Live At The Royal Albert Hall (3 CD SPV 093-74882) 2007 - View From A Backstage Pass 2CD 2010 - Greatest Hits Live (2CD Geffen RecordsB0038M61DC) + 2014 - Quadrophenia - Live In London (2CD) Сборники и компиляции: 1968 - Magic Bus - The Who On Tour (MCA MCBBD-31333) 1971 - Meaty Beaty Big And Bouncy (MCA MCBBD-37001) 1974 - Odds and Sods (Polydor 517 946-2) 1974 - Odds & Sods - 1998 (Polydor 539791-2) 1979 - The Kids Are Alright - 2000 (Polydor 543694-2) 1979 - Quadrophenia (Original Sountrack) - 2000 (Polydor 543691-2) 1983 - Rarities 1966-1972 Vols I & II - 2004 (Universal 80100953) 1985 - Who's Missing ~1990 (MCA MCBBD-31221) 1987 - Two's Missing (Transfer 1st Vynil MCA Pressing - Steve Hoffman Mastering) (MCA-5712) 1988 - Who's Better, Who's Best (Polydor 835 389/2) 1994 - Thirty Years Of Maximum R&B (4 CD box set Polydor 521 751-2) 1996 - My Generation - The Very Best Of The Who (MCA MCASD-11462) 1999 - The Best Of The Who - The Millennium Collection (MCAD-11951) 2000 - BBC Sessions (Polydor 547727-2) 2002 - Ultimate Collection (2CD MCA 088 112 877-2) 2004 - Then and Now!
